Invoice 14 Days Overdue: Email Templates for Freelancers
At 14 days overdue the friendly "just checking in" phase is over. The client has seen at least one reminder, and the invoice is now drifting toward the bottom of their pile. This is the point to get specific: name the amount, the days overdue, and a new pay-by date, and make paying a single click. Stay polite, but stop sounding like it is optional.
What changes at two weeks overdue
- Lead with the facts: invoice number, amount, original due date, and "now 14 days overdue".
- Give one clear new date (for example, 5 business days out) instead of "as soon as possible".
- Ask a direct question they must answer: "Can you confirm it will be paid by [date]?"
- Re-attach the invoice and the payment link every time. Never make them search for it.
Before you hit send
- Check the invoice actually reached the right person (and was not stuck in AP approval).
- Look at your contract for a late fee clause. Mention it only if it is written down.
- Send it early in the week, in the morning, when inboxes get cleared.
- Put the next step in your calendar now: a follow-up call or final notice at 21 to 30 days.
